STX Catalytic Process

Source Technologies’ organic STX REDOX process will completely remove sulfide and other reduced sulfur compounds in a matter of minutes. Whether treating municipal wastewater or industrial wastewater, this process can be strategically utilized to fully oxidize sulfide before it becomes an issue.

The STX catalyst is an environmentally friendly, pH neutral organic reagent. STX is a complex organic compound which, when combined with selected oxidizing agents (typically H2O2), generates a REDOX reaction. The REDOX reaction prioritizes sulfide and reduces it to base elemental sulfur without generating any additional waste or sludge. Sulfide and other sulfonated organic compounds can be completely removed in as little as 3 minutes with proper mixing and treatment can last up to 6 hours.

REDOX stands for Reduction and Oxidation. The STX catalyst creates a non-covalent bond with sulfide, changing the reagent from a lean state to a rich state as it gains an electron from sulfide, reducing the sulfide molecule to base inert elemental sulfur. This is the Reduction stage. The STX catalyst then has the electron removed from it by the oxidant, causing it to go from a rich state back to a lean state. This is the Oxidation stage. Every individual molecule of the STX catalyst is able to react 40 to 50 times with sulfide molecules without creating any negative byproduct. The inert elemental sulfur is a colloidal solid which is stable and unable to convert back to sulfide. This colloidal solid is negligible and easily removed in the wastewater treatment process. Most importantly, sulfide isn’t sequestered or precipitated out, but completed eliminated.

Application of the STX Process is very straightforward. The process simply requires metering of the STX catalyst with the oxidizing agent into the targeted wastewater with adequate mixing. The reaction occurs quickly thereafter.

The STX Process works over a wide pH range but is most efficient from 6.5 to 7.85.

A broad list of treatable chemicals would include hydrogen sulfide, carbonyl sulfide, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, selected pesticides, petroleum hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents.
